Pupil Parliament

At Alexandra Park, empowering every child is a core priority. We believe every child has a voice, and we are committed to helping them use it to positively impact their own lives, the school, and the wider community. Our School Parliament, made up of eight different councils, provides an invaluable platform for children to express themselves, develop essential skills, and contribute to meaningful improvements.

Children who wish to join a council can submit a letter of application to the staff member leading that council. Applications are reviewed, and successful candidates are appointed for a six-month term, allowing two different groups to represent each council throughout the school year. This ensures a wide range of children have the chance to participate and lead.

Each council meets once every half-term to plan and implement projects within their area of responsibility. Representatives from each council then take part in a full parliament meeting, where they share updates with Mr. Brooke. As part of this process, every class votes on a suggestion for school improvement, and the Pupil Parliament narrows these down to the top three, which are then voted on by the whole school. This system not only develops children's debating and decision-making skills but also provides them with a real-life experience of democracy.

In addition, every year members of our parliament attend the Stockport Schools Climate Action Assembly, collaborating with peers from other schools to tackle environmental priorities and vote on shared development goals.

Through our diverse range of councils, children also gain an understanding of our school values and British Values, such as democracy, responsibility, and individual liberty. Most importantly, being part of a council offers children a real opportunity to contribute to school life, develop leadership skills, and aspire to be the best version of themselves.
